And after a few seconds, the video’s being shown on my television and it looks gorgeous: VLC‘s developers have been working on Chromecast support for some time, and it’s finally available in version 3.0. It’s the third one in the pic above that’s the actual television, so that’s what I’ll select. I have three options for casting in my home: A Vizio soundbar, Vizio TV and Google Home unit. Turns out that Casting video content is categorized as “Rendering”, and the “ Renderer” menu shows all the expected Chromecast options: Go back and look at the Playback menu again. Unlike most Cast-enabled players, VLC doesn’t use the standard Cast icon in the app, so if you’re looking for the icon to begin streaming, you’re looking in the wrong spot. After some digging it turns out that Casting is indeed a part of the Playback menu – which is the logical place to locate the feature – but that it’s hidden behind developer technical jargon rather than a user friendly option. In order to stream to your Chromecast device, you’ll need to learn where the cast option is located within VLC. Using VLC with Chromecast lets you share nearly any media file with your TV in seconds. Seems like it could be in that first section but nope. VLC is a media player you can use on your computer, but it’s also a handy way to send videos and music to your Chromecast. No “Cast…” or “Choose output device…” or similar. Along the top are a lot of menus and features (one great thing about VLC is that it gives you a ton of control over video playback), so perhaps “ Playback“?

My first thought was that the “fill screen” button would add an option to Cast the video but… nope. Should look familiar as the basic playback features and layout remains the same.
